“Discover the Maldives” through the green resort, Soneva Fushi
We hop on board a high-speed boat that propels its way to the much-talked- about resort – Soneva Fushi.
To our surprise, our shoes are taken away from us! “Why?” we ask. “Because you won’t need them” comes the reply. It’s a barefoot luxury resort that awaits us, where the slogan is, ‘no shoes, no news’. So, that means no smart phones, laptops, etc., either. We can’t help but feel excited over the prospect of being cut-off from the world! A digital detox is just what we needed!
Our Dream Villa on the Beach
We are welcomed by our personal butler to our home at the resort. Characterized by elegant simplicity, these roomy apartments are absolutely breathtaking! This is everything we wanted and more from our home away from home. The beautiful blue ocean is visible from our living room, and right outside the windows is the gorgeous expanse of beach. This is personal luxury at its best.
What’s more, our accommodation has been built with environmentally-friendly materials. With high ceilings, and plenty of air and sunshine, it is a treat to just stay in your villa and relax. This is totally guilt-free luxury at its best!
We also found everything necessary to make our stay absolutely comfortable, from a well-equipped kitchen to a projector and a collection of fabulous movies to enjoy while staying in. Oh, there’s a TV too, but who needs it when you have a beautiful pool just outside and the ocean just a few meters from your home?
This must be heaven, we thought. The hotel staff are at our beck and call at the press of a button, 24 hours of the day. And all this, in the pristine environment of lovely beaches, beautiful natural life and even some cute furry creatures living among the greenery!
So, if you’re interested, here’s a little bit about the history of Soneva Fushi:
It all started when young Swedish model, Eva went to the Maldives for a fashion shoot and instantly fell in love with the island. She never forgot about this magical place, and after she got married, decided to venture in the tourism business with a focus on nature and a desire to preserve the unique culture of the Maldives.
So, in 1980, she created a company with her husband Sonu, with an emphasis on eco-tourism, and 1995, Soneva Fushi was born. Eva’s vision was for holidaymakers to be able to enjoy the comfort and opulence of a good holiday in the midst of a green environment, without harming its original state.
Now, what does the resort offer, in addition?
Well, there’s the Observatory for the romantics and the Chocolate Room for those with a sweet tooth. All this is in keeping with the modern concept of -‘beyond luxury’ which holiday-goers crave for, as it is not just about the pool and champagne in crystal glasses anymore.
Soneva Fushi is also great for privacy. You can ride a bicycle through the greenery, never once having to worry about your attire. Here, no one bothers with prying. It’s total seclusion and absolute happiness. And that’s why, we got on our bikes and went to check out the island. Soneva Fushi has a spa, a yoga pavilion, a herb garden which provides produce for the resort’s restaurants, an outdoor movie theatre and a private observatory.
We were also pleasantly surprised to find three rooms; one offering cheese, another chocolate, and another, ice cream to satisfy our taste buds. Eva is a lover of chocolate, and so she created a place where chocolate is made right on the island and visitors can enjoy an array of desserts, including about 60 varieties of ice cream!
Then there’s the tree-top restaurant where you can enjoy so many tasty dishes and organic cocktails…
The island has 4 restaurants, 4 bars and even a wine cellar with a collection of over 7,000 wines! The hotel staff can also arrange for you to have your meals on the beach, or to deliver them to your room so that you can enjoy your food in your own space.
For dinner, we went to ‘Fresh in the Garden’ – a restaurant located on a hill. The restaurant’s terrace in built on stilts and offers stunning views. You can sit inside the restaurant, but we preferred the gazebo outside where we could enjoy the sights and sounds of the Maldives.
The restaurant’s chef suggested some dishes and we were glad to follow his advice; our palates were more than satisfied by fresh cocktails, followed by gourmet dishes of international standard.
Even a simple meal at Soneva Fushi is a wonderful ritual, and bear the hallmarks of Eva, whose ideas inspired the tiniest details of the resort.
It’s not easy in this day and age to find a place that invests in the soul, but Soneva Fushi does just that. Living in harmony with nature, this is a rare place that offers comfort for the soul and peace and tranquility for the mind.
