Staying in a live-aboard is a fast becoming a new trend of vacationing in the Maldives. A number of resorts have also commissioned private yachts and are offering them to guests as part of their island holiday. But what are they really and which one is the right one for you?

LIVE-ABOARD

A live-aboard is literally a vessel where you can live on for a period of time. You eat, sleep, shower, spend time aboard the vessel while you visit different islands or spots and swim, snorkel, dive or surf. These organized trips follow an itinerary to the dot depending on weather and sea conditions. You have to stay on the live-aboard for the entire duration of your cruise.

This is the best option for serious divers and/or surfers who want to experience different diving spots and surfing points in the country. Not really a good idea for anyone else as there will be very limited activities on board and there is no option to cut the journey short.

PRIVATE YACHTS

Some resorts have fashioned yachts with private, uber luxurious rooms where guests can stay as an alternative to their island stay especially for those who are staying for long periods or guests who want to experience something unique.

They can stay and live on board for a short period to see other islands or go to different spots but they will split their stay between the yacht and the island which is a great way to experience the best of the Maldives. They will still be able to stay on the island as well. Considerations though would be the budget since the yacht rooms tend to be pricier and availability since these are very limited.
